Dissolving The Kick Leuk Foundation

Dear Friends,

As the saying goes, “all good things must come to an end”. After much contemplation and discussion, the board of The Kick Leuk Foundation has decided to dissolve the foundation as of December 1, 2020.  We would like to thank all of those who have helped us achieve so much.  We could not have achieved any of our success without the unbelievable support and donations from our family, friends, donors, supporters, and community. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We would also like to express our gratitude to our fellow board members, Rob Boyce and Paula Hoff (and their spouses Nancy Boyce and Charlie Hoff) who have worked with us to make the foundation a success.

After our daughter was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia(AML) in 2010, we were determined to make a difference in the world of pediatric leukemia. We are happy to report that our daughter, Carly, is now 25 years old and working at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Fingers always crossed. Full circle!

It was startling to find out how little funding there is for pediatric oncology research.  We started The Kick Leuk Foundation in February of 2013 with the intention to raise funding for AML research at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This was successfully done through annual golf events, 5k races, a comedy event, annual college level soccer tournaments, retail stores that donated a percentage of their sales over an extended period of time, and private donations.

Some of the Achievements of KLF:

  • Our greatest achievement as a foundation has been the funding of the AML research project at CHOP.  We are very proud to see how our annual grants to CHOP have aided the brilliant doctors, scientists and researchers in the quest to find a cure for AML. We have watched the research grow from its beginning stages to seeing it brought to its first clinical trial! This is what we call making a difference! To date, The Kick Leuk Foundation has donated roughly $285,000 to help make this happen.
  • Another achievement of the foundation which we are very proud of is our meal program.  Through the incredible generosity of area restaurants in Bucks County, KLF was able to donate monthly meals to the Oncology Family Room at CHOP. A huge thank you to Susan Brussock and Laura Miller for taking over the reigns for the last several years and continuing to make this program a success. Because of their hard work and our wonderful driving volunteers, we never missed a month in almost 7 years!!
  •  One last achievement of the foundation has been the housing assistance program for pediatric oncology families.  We were able to defray the cost of stay for some of the oncology families at the Ronald McDonald house in Philadelphia.

With all of this said, it is with sadness that we have made the decision to close our doors. Unfortunately, we are an event driven foundation so the current state of things with the pandemic is not conducive to conducting business.

**Here’s our shameless push for last minute donations! We will still be accepting donations to KLF until we close our books on December 1, 2020. You can go to Kickleuk.org to make a donation to add to the final grant which we will be donating to the AML research project at CHOP by the end of 2020.

Thank you for helping us make our dream come to fruition. We needed your help to make this foundation a success and you didn’t let us down. THANK YOU!  Thank you so much for helping us make a difference in the world of pediatric leukemia. There’s still a long way to go, but every donation gets us closer to a cure!

We wish you all the best of health and happiness.

Warmest regards,

Suzanne & Bob Stephens, Co-founders
